Orientation - 7:30 pm, Wednesday August 4th, 2010
An orientation for those interested in teacher training will be held at 4704 East Mountain View Dr in Normal Heights.
Call (619) 226-2202
Course Description
The course is an intensive 2-year program designed to impart the basic skills necessary to become a certified introductory level teacher in the Iyengar Yoga method.
Class time is balanced between direct teaching, student teaching, guided practice, and required theory. Whenever possible the teaching is active so that students experience the validity of what is taught instead of memorizing mere words. Regular guided practice and refinement develops the students' understanding, knowledge, confidence, and ability.
Home assignments include reading, writing and practice logs. We review and correct your logs to help you practice more effectively. As your practice deepens and improves, your foundation for teaching broadens.
Trainees are encouraged to meet weekly with one another to reinforce the lessons learned.
An extensive Apprenticeship Program is included.
Trainees should attend regular Iyengar yoga classes for a sufficiently long period of time to establish the fundamentals in this method before attempting teacher training.
Trainees must attend a minimum of 4 classes per month with either Eddy or Mary.
Training is in these five basic areas:
ASANA & PRANAYAMA: You will study and teach the 64 asanas and 3 pranayamas as outlined in the Teacher In Training & Introductory Syllabi in the IYNAUS Certification Manual.
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY: We will introduce you to basic human anatomy and physiology. In particular, you will study the ways in which the systems of the human body function during asana and pranayama.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY: You will study and practice essential techniques of teaching group classes. A few examples are: how to setup a class, effective demonstrations, learning to "see," pacing, sequencing, linking, and much more.
PHILOSOPHY: You will read from yoga texts such as Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and the Bhagavad Gita. We will emphasize the integration of these principles into your practice and teaching.
BASIC THERAPEUTICS: Common ailments and conditions typically seen in a yoga class will be covered. Areas include: Low back, neck, knees, shoulders, wrists, high and low blood pressure, headaches and menstruation.
